We often eat at a huge, noisy food hall off the campus along the main road in the evening. There are 94 items on the menu, all in Vietnamese. We take our dictionaries and guide books in an effort to try and categorize the food pages and make some sense of it. The staff crowd round us, laughing. We are the only westerners. There are photos of some of the dishes but they are faded and look as if they have come from some ancient 30's recipe book. I am particularly keen to avoid frogs and dog. The third time we go they proudly present a complete English translation of the entire menu, done especially for us. I am uncertain of the literalness of translation e.g. banana inflorescence salad. I will avoid crocodile meat fondue and stir fried pig stomach with pirella. Maybe at a later date I will brave braised trionychid turtle with green banana and soya curd or crab basella alba soup. For now I am delighted with braised duck with dracontemeium fruits and steamed prawns with beer and noodles. I like this restaurant. Staff tuck in cheerfully to the dish which we leave untouched, realizing we have made a bad mistake. They brew great beer on the premises (i.e. on the pavement.)
