First lesson. A lively group of 25 eighteen year olds. Plan -different ways of introducing yourselves. . .. told them about my former work with pre-school children and families. As a demonstration (good excuse) I read them a story. The 18 year olds go wide eyed and silent at The Very Hungry Caterpillar and one girl volunteered to read book in Vietnamese. I couldn't help but laugh – the whole class spontaneously joined in with the chorus lines. They seem to like chanting in unison. Our local food market sells mounds of edible caterpillars. I don't know if this cultural difference had any impact -probably not.

Share with your neighbor – report two ways you are the same, and two ways you are different.

'I am different to you. I arrived to a room with air conditioning, a fridge and a T.V. and I minded that the sateen curtains were yellow.

'I am different to all of you because many of you have little money to eat more than beans and rice.

'I am the same as you because I am enthusiastic and I have dreams too although they sometimes falter and fade.

'I am different to you because in my country people are often very rude to tourists.

I do not share these items with them.
